TRIO/Student Support Services

SSS History

Why are we called TRIO programs?  Originally there were 3 programs-Upward Bound, Talent Search and Special Services. Student Support Services is one of 7 current TRIO programs. The other 6 are: Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science, Veterans Upward Bound, Educational Opportunity Center, Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement.

How students are selected:

  • Must be first generation - neither parent graduated from a 4 year college
  • Low Income - as determined by federal guidelines
  • Disabled - registered with Mr. Ronnie Sampson or can provide documentation verifying disability
  • GPA - students with a GPA below 2.5 are first priority
  • Single parent
  • Returning adult status

What we provide

Counseling - We provide social and academic counseling related to the students' educational goals. We also provide academic advisement, information about financial resources available to the student, and assist in the transfer process.

Tutoring
     Process to receive tutoring: Once accepted into the program, you will need to complete a tutoring request for with your schedule and we will pair you with an approved tutor. You can access our Tutee Request Form by clicking on this link or going to the TRIO page in CampusCruiser.

     Process to become a tutor: An interested student must complete an application, meet the cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5 (with an A or B in the course to be tutored), obtain two faculty recommendations, and schedule an interview with Kimberly Conyers (kconyers@robeson.edu, 272-3357)

Workshops
We offer 6-7 workshops per semester. Topics include: Study Skills, Time Management, Test-Taking Skills, Resume Building, Transfer Assistance, College Survival, and Financial Aid Information. We also offer an Open House during the fall and a Dress for Success seminar in the spring.

Financial aid counseling
We will assistance students with their FAFSA and applying for scholarships.

Cultural trips
Examples of trips: Spring Break trip to Atlanta, GA including visits to the MLK Historic Site and the Fernback Museum of History. We will provide the necessary expenses (tickets, transportation).

Transfer Students
For transferring students, we will arrange for a campus tour of any campus in North Carolina and provide transportation.


DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS
